My DreamsHave you ever really wanted to do something? Have you had a goal that you set for yourself that you desperately wanted to achieve? I know I have.
I want to tell you a story about myself. I’m a huge nerd! One of the things I’m extremely passionate about is professional wrestling.
Don’t laugh.
I’ve watched it since I was probably about 5 years old, and though I don’t get to watch it as much as I used to, I still keep up with it.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps, one of my goals was to go to wrestling school. I figured I was a fairly strong and tough guy, and I could cut a halfway decent promo (dialogue promoting a match or belittling an opponent). I had a name picked out and everything.

I don’t know if you know this, but not just anybody can become a professional wrestler. You have to go to school for it. As they say in the business, “It’s not ballet.” You have to be taught how to wrestle. You have to be taught how to make big moves, make them look convincing, and not hurt your coworkers so you can do it all again in the next town on the next day.
I happen to live in an area that has a VERY good wrestling school and local promotion. I had all the tools to make it in the ring! I had the size, I had the speed, I had the desire to entertain! I had everything(!)…except for the money.
Wrestling school can be an extremely expensive venture. On average, wrestling schools in the United States costs $3000. That’s money I simply didn’t have. On top of that, I didn’t have the personal finance knowledge to learn how to make that kind of money over time. Basically, a lack of money kept me from being able to achieve my dream.
Fortunately, my past doesn’t have to be your present. My blog exists so that you can learn personal finance skills that I didn’t have in my youth, so you can chase all of your dreams!
I often think, “If only I knew how to make some extra money in my 20s. How different would my life be?”
Maybe I could have sold out Madison Square Garden! Maybe I could have headlined Wrestlemania. Maybe I could have been a multiple-time World Heavyweight Champion.
Your Dreams
Perhaps your dreams are more down-to-earth. Maybe you want to pay off your credit cards. Maybe you want to buy a house or pay off student loans. Or perhaps you’re not trying to earn extra money to live your dreams. You may be between jobs; reading this and just trying to keep your head above water.
I’ve been the dreamer. I’ve been the realist. And I’ve been down on my luck. Let me help you. What if I told you I know how you can earn an extra $1000 a month? What would you do with that money? You might live your dreams. You might crush your debt. Or you might just endure until your job situation improves.
Not every side hustle I’m going to talk about is going to earn you an extra $1000 a month. Some have the potential to earn you much more money, while some maybe a little less. It all depends on the effort you put in. You may need to pair side hustles together to make it over the $1000 a month threshold.
Acknowledging the Obvious
I realize I’m writing this during a time where meeting people and touching things are taboo. That’s why the vast majority of these side hustles allow you to work from home. However, one day, the world’s battle with coronavirus will end.
I’ve included work you can do outside when that day comes. Today I’m going to show you six ways to earn an extra $1000 a month in 2020.
1. Teaching English Online
Did you know that teaching could be a lucrative side hustle? There are companies willing to pay over $20 an hour for a minimum commitment of 5 hours per week for you to teach children to speak English!
These children are most often Chinese. However, you don’t have to be able to speak Chinese in order to participate. These are full English immersion classes and there is no need for you to speak the student’s native language.
Online English teachers are in high demand, as not just anyone can do the job. Many companies require that an applicant be a native English speaker, with an American, Australian, British, or Canadian accent. American and Canadian accents are often most preferred. A Bachelor’s degree is also required by many companies.
2. Blogging
It feels kind of awkward for me to blog about blogging. This may be the first time I’ve done so. Blogging is an excellent way to make an extra $1000 per month in 2020. In fact, you can make substantially more than that. There are hundreds of millions of blogs in existence on the internet, many of which earn between $1000 — $10,000 a month.
The oldest and best-maintained blogs earn the most money. Since becoming a blogger, I’ve become aware of a few bloggers in the $50,000 — $100,000 a month range. Don’t let that discourage you though. Even newer blogs can earn around $3 a day.
You can use a blog to teach people about your given area of expertise, or just to share your opinion on events. The best thing is that there are no prerequisites or special training required. All you need are your own thoughts and a message to share!
Since you’re reading this on Medium, I think it goes without saying that if you’re interested in starting a blog, Medium is a great place to start! You get to grow as a writer and test what kind of headlines people are willing to click, and what articles people are willing to read.
3. Charging Scooters
Remember when I mentioned talking about side hustles you can do after coronavirus passes? This is one of them.

If you live in or around a major city in the United States, you may have noticed electric scooters stationed in your area. Companies like Bird, Lime, Lyft, and Uber place these scooters all around the city to help people commute in a way that’s faster and more fun than walking, but doesn’t pollute the environment.
These scooters work through apps that you use to unlock them and ride. When you’re done riding, you lock them and end your trip. The app bills your credit card automatically.
These same companies offer people an opportunity to earn money charging these electric scooters. Now you can’t just pick them up and take them home! You have to sign up to be a charger. Upon acceptance into the charging program, the company will give you a charger and the ability to use your app to find scooters that need charging.
You earn money by taking scooters home, charging them, and bringing them back to the designated drop-off point. It’s really that easy! On average, you can earn $5 per scooter. That may not sound like much. But if you charge a few scooters a day, you can soon find yourself earning an extra $1000 a month with little to no effort.
4. Freelance Writing
Perhaps you want to write, but don’t want the responsibility of maintaining a blog. When you blog you are solely responsible for your success or failure. You are solely responsible for the traffic your articles get. You are solely responsible for the money you earn.
But what if that wasn’t the case?
What if you could still write, and guarantee payment on a per article basis? What if you could effectively outsource the generation of traffic and the maintenance of that blog to someone else?
That’s where freelance writing comes in. Freelance writing allows you to grow your skills while still earning a decent amount per article. Companies need content written for their websites, blogs, and videos. New writers can make about $50/article. At this rate, making $1000 a month is as simple as writing an article five days a week for four weeks.
Your rate can grow as your experience grows. Once you’ve developed a portfolio, you can move up to charging $150 or more per article. Meaning that if you only needed an extra $1000 per month, you could write two articles a week for four weeks and still come out $200 ahead of your needs!
There are many websites you can use if you’re interested in pursuing freelance writing. The most popular of these are Fiverr, Upwork, and Problogger. Fiverr allows you to set your own rate as a freelance writer and increase your fee with extras and various tiers of service. Setting your own rate will allow you to decide how many articles you need to write to earn $1000 a month.
5. Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant is a freelance administrative professional. He or she offers professional administrative, technical, or creative assistance remotely. Technically, a virtual assistant should be capable of doing anything business’s onsite support staff is typically capable of doing.
Virtual assistants are not limited to standard office work. Many virtual assistants help small businesses manage their websites and blogs, maintain their financial transactions, or other services. Some even specialize in their talents, creating a niche for themselves.
Many virtual assistants run their own businesses from home. Experienced virtual assistants can earn $25 per hour or more. At that rate, you’d only need to work 10 hours a week to make an extra $1000 a month. New virtual assistants tend to get jobs from freelance sites like Fiverr, Upwork, or Freelancer.com.
6. Trash Removal
The final way I have for you to earn an extra $1000 a month in 2020 is to remove the trash. It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. This side hustle might just be the fastest and easiest way to earn an extra $1000 a month on this list.
When it comes to making money picking up trash, most people seem to cite the story of Brian Winch. Brian is no one special. He started out with nothing but a high school diploma, meager savings, and more bills than he could pay.
That’s when he started walking around his local mall. He remembered how his father used to have a side hustle picking up trash in the mall. He recalled how easy it was. It was just him and his father walking around cleaning up trash before the stores opened and getting paid for it.
Fast forward to today and Brian is getting paid for it too. He’s getting paid quite a bit, actually! Brian was able to turn his side hustle into a $650,000 per year business.
I’m not saying that you’ll make $650,000 per year if you start a trash removal side hustle. What I am saying is that trash removal can be quite lucrative because so few people want to do it. How lucrative? You can start off easily charging $30 — $50 per hour to clean malls and office parks in your area.
At $30 an hour, you only need to work 35 hours a month to make an extra $1000! Feel free to check the link in my profile for other opportunities.
Conclusion
There are many reasons people may want to earn an extra $1000 a month. You can use the money to help you pay off debt, make ends meet, or live your dreams. There’s a number of ways you can accomplish this, many of which are unconventional. You can choose any method you’re comfortable with, or discover your own. The most important thing is that you take action.
